Stephen Smale, 1930-

Renowned American mathematician at Berkeley.  During the 1970s, Sephen Smale brought global analysis to bear on general equilibrium theory, particularly on the perennially-vexing question of stability.

Smale was one of the winners of the Fields Medal in 1966.
